Hatsumode, the New Year’s first visit to a shrine

Hatsumode is one of the major Japanese traditions, which is the first visit to a shrine or a temple of the year.  The people usually visit on the first, second, or third day of the new year and to pray for happiness, good health and safety for yourself and your family & friends throughout the year, and for the business & household to prosper.

It is also a custom to drink sacred sake, ‘omiki’ during the visit.
